Chico Enterprise-Record, Wednesday, April 24, 1968: "Vernetta McClurkin. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Hall-Van Hook Funeral Chapel for Vernetta Blanche McClurkin, 79, who died Monday afternoon. Mrs. McClurkin was born Oct. 26, 1888, in Belton, Tex., and as a young girl she and her family moved to Port LaVaca, Tex., where she was reared.
"She later moved to Los Angeles and there met and married Ralph McClurkin. They moved to Willows in 1917. They owned and operated the United Cleaners and Troy Laundry in Willows until his retirement in 1946 when they purchased an almond and walnut ranch at Rt. 3, Box 127, Dayton Road.
"McClurkin preceded her in death in 1961. She was a member of Marshall Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, of Willows.
"Survivors include two sons, Robert of Santa Monica and Howard of Oroville; three daughters, Mrs. Marjorie Shallenberger of Hinkley and Mrs. Betty Ford and Mrs. Patricia Hatfield, both of Chico; a brother, Edward Smith of Downey; and two sisters, Mrs. Marie Prucha and Mrs. Margaret Christensen both of Los Angeles. There are 11 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
"Officiating at the service will be the Rev. Lloyd Thompson of the Grace Baptist Church. Organist will be Norman Sandberg. Casketbearers will be Craig Ford, Mark Ford, Michael Scott, Bruce Ford, Wilbur Meinberg and Lee McCleary. Interment will be in the Glen Oaks Memorial Park beside her husband."
