North Carolina Governor. In 1892, he was appointed as a United States District Attorney, serving six years. He was elected as the Governor of North Carolina and began serving in 1901. He devoted much of his four years in office working to improve the education system of the state. Under his admistration, 3,459 new school buildings were construction. After leaving office, he traveled to other states discussing how to improve education. He died while giving a speech to the Alabama Educational Association in 1912. (bio by: Evening Blues)
