US Congressman. Presidential Cabinet member. He served as a member of the North Carolina state legislature before being elected a superior court judge in 1820. In 1841, he was appointed by President Harrison as the Secretary of the Navy. He briefly served in the same position under President Tyler, but resigned. In 1846, he was elected as a United States Senator from North Carolina, serving until 1855.
