Jacob Luther Aull, veteran newsman, dies at age 69
JOHNSTON - Jacob Luther Aull of Johnston, 69, of Aull Drive, died Nov. 10, 1986, at Providence Hospital in Columbia after a short illness.
He was the senior editor of The Citizen News in Edgefield County.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II in the European Theater. He moved to Johnston in 1946 and became a partner with George Waters in the printing business. In February of 1947, he established The Ridge Citizen newspaper in Johnston. He was a charter member of the Newberry Jaycees, a charter member of the Johnston Jaycees, a charter member of the American Legion Post 154, a charter member of the Johnston Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 9012 and a charter member of the Merchants Association. He was a member of the Johnston Lions Club, serving more than 20 years as secretary. He also served as president. He was a registered member of the Boy Scouts of America for 46 years. He served more than 25 years as a scoutmaster, and was holder of Scouters Key and Silver Beaver awards. He served for 20 years as a member of the Selective Service Board of Edgefield County. He also served on the Johnston Great Town Committee. He was a member of the Press Association of South Carolina, and served one term as chairman of the weekly division. He was awarded the Service to Mankind award by the Johnston Sertoma Club in April of 1986. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, and had served on the church council. He was lay chairman, secretary to the congregation and a Sunday School teacher. He was a graduate of Newberry College. Surviving are his wife, Peggy Hite Aull; a daughter, Margaret Aull Bledsoe of Johnston; a son, Jacob Luther Aull Jr. of Edgefield; and four brothers, Elbert H. Aull of Raleigh, N.C., Francis M. Aull of Salisbury, N.C., Julian Aull of Johnston and Phil S. Aull of Charlotte, N.C.
Services: 3 p.m. Wednesday at the St. John's Lutheran Church, Johnston, with burial in Mount of Olives Cemetery, Johnston.
