Bertha was the third of seven children born to Delos and Carrie Genung Bates. She was born and raised in Madison, Ohio where her family had deep roots. Bertha graduated from Oberlin Kindergarten Training School in 1908, then taught kindergarten in Hilo, Hawaii for two years at the Waiakea Kai Social Settlement. She returned to Madison, Ohio where she married her aunt's step-son Roland Dion Standish in 1913. They grew up together like family although they were not related.
They lived in Los Angeles until they moved to Salt Lake City in 1920. Together they had four daughters; Betty, Katharine, and twins Genevieve and Jeanette. After Roland retired in 1946, they moved to Santa Monica, CA. They eventually moved to Phoenix, Arizona where their oldest daughter was living. Affectionately known as Bird, she loved to write poems and took up pottery in her old age. She became partially blind as she aged, but that didn't stop her from doing the things she loved.
