Son of Levi & Elizabeth Hill Bonnell; grandson of Moses & Hannah Buckingham Bonnell. Husband of Mary Washington Matkins, married 27 June 1864 in Shelby County, Missouri.

Union Civil War Veteran:

He mustered into the Union military service on 16 Jan. 1862 at Shelbyville, Shelby County, Missouri into Co. A. Mounted Riflemen, Missouri State Militia as a private. This unit became the 11th Cavalry MO State Militia. Henry was still in Co. A, but now in the 11th Cavalry Missouri State Militia.

The 11th Cav., MSM on 2 Sept 1862, by State Order No 151 was transferred and consolidated into Co. I, 2nd Regt. MO State Militia Cavalry.

He appeared in a Regimental Descriptive Book for Company I, 2nd Reg't of the MO State Militia Calvary, undated, but based on his age was in 1863:

28 years old (was 26 when he first signed up), 5ft. 81/4 inches tall, dark complexion, grey eyes and light hair. Born Clermont Co. Ohio; Farmer

He brought his own horse and tack, became a teamster as a soldier and attained the rank of Quarter-Master Sergeant in Co. I, 2nd Regt. MO State Militia Cavalry on 4 Oct. 1863.

In St. Louis, Missouri on 7 Feb. 1865 he mustered out by expiration of term of service.

He applied for and received a Civil War Veteran Pension, certificate #690490.

He was a member of the Masonic Order and the Grand Army of the Republic, George Miller Post.
