Japanese Military Leader. He rose to prominence as a general serving under territorial lord Nobunaga Oda. He received the castle at Sakamoto for his services and was appointed governor of the province of Kyuga. He subsequently led an army that conquered for Oda the province of Tamba. On June 21, 1582, for reasons not entirely understood, Akechi betrayed Oda and attacked him at Kyoto's Honnoji Temple, forcing the latter to kill his son Nobutada Oda and then commit ritual suicide. Akechi subsequently took the title of commander in chief of the army, but was attacked and defeated by Hideyoshi Toyotomi, another subordinate of Oda, shortly thereafter. He is sometimes known as "The 13 Day Shogun." One of his daughters married military hero Tadaoki Hosokawa, converted to Christianity and became famous as "Gracia."
