John Woods
Birth: Oct. 18, 1794
Death: Jul. 30, 1855

US Congressman. Born in a log cabin near Johnstown, Pennsylvania, he was the son of an Irish immigrant and moved to Ohio in 1798 with his parents when he was a child. He attended the common schools and served in the United States Army during the War of 1812. He was included in the last draft of Ohio Militia in 1814 when he was 19 years old and served in the garrison at Fort Meigs when peace with Great Britain was proclaimed. After the war, he ran a school near Springborough for two years while studying law under John McLean. Admitted to the Ohio Bar Association in 1819, he practiced as an attorney in Hamilton, Ohio and became the prosecuting attorney of Butler County, Ohio from 1820 to 1825. He resigned to accept election as an Adams Democratic Republican to represent Ohio's 2nd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives and served from 1825 to 1829. As a Congressman, Woods was a member of the Committee on Roads and Canals and sponsored a bill that passed in the House to extend the Miami Canal from Dayton to Lake Erie by transferring ownership of hundreds of thousands of acres of land to the state of Ohio. He opposed election of the popular Andrew Jackson for President which contributed to an unsuccessful campaign for reelection in 1828. He then returned to Hamilton and became the proprietor, editor, and publisher of the "Hamilton Intelligencer" from 1829 to 1845. He was elected by the Ohio Legislature in 1845 as the Auditor of the State of Ohio and served in that capacity until 1851. He then became the president of the Hamilton and Indianapolis Railroad and was also the director of construction for the Cincinnati and Hamilton turnpike. He died in Hamilton, Ohio in 1855 when he was 60 years old. (bio by: K Guy)
