He owned 400 acres on the Perch River Flats, town of Brownsville, NY. He raised & sold fine horses. Also large flocks of turkeys. He was a pioneer in the cheesemaking business in Jefferson County. He was a stauch Baptist and instrumental in building "The Old Stone Church." He was a Deacon. He donated the land and built a parsonage on it. He was a strict disciplinarian; said his 10 sons had never drank, smoked, or played cards. He was the shoemaker for the community.
