Mr. Thomas Broome Wilkes Jr, son of Thomas Broome and Myrtle Henry Wilkes, was born in Blair, Fairfield, South Carolina, United States, on October 25, 1928.

Thomas was a graduate of Monticello High School and was a member of Lebanon Presbyterian Church. He served four years in the United States Navy and was a member of the American Legion Post in Winnsboro, South Carolina, United States.

He was drowned on May 27, 1958 in a lake joining the Waccamaw River at Star Bluff in the Wampee section of Horry, South Carolina, United States. At the time, he was a member of a survey team of the International Paper Company and had hooked the survey chain to hit his belt to carry it across to the opposite side of the lake and was well out from the bank when he apparently stopped swimming to see if he could reach the bottom, he then started swimming again but shortly sank and failed to come to the surface. His companions pulled the survey chain but it came adrift from the belt. His body was recovered by the Horry County Rescue Squad some six hours later.

His body was put to rest at Salem Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Fairfield, South Carolina, United States.
