U.S. Congressman. Immigrating to the United States, he settled in Rowan County, North Carolina, and engaged in wagon transportation. He was treasury commissioner of the colony of North Carolina in 1771, a member of the safety committee of Rowan County in 1774, and a member of the Provincial Johnston Court House in 1775. During the American Revolutionary War, he served as a Brigadier General in command of the Rowan County Regiment, North Carolina Militia. After the war, he served in the North Carolina State Senate (1781 to 1782) and as a member of the North Carolina State House of Commons (1783 to 1792). He was elected as an Anti-Administration candidate to the Third Congress and reelected as a Republican to the Fourth and Fifth Congresses (1793 to 1799). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he engaged as a planter and was an extensive landowner until his death.

In his private character a tender husband, an affectionate parent, an indulgent master, benevolent to the poor and attentive to his happiness. In that state where we contemplate his existence, leaving memory to retain him here.
