A tailor by trade, James enlisted to serve in the Mexican War at Hollidaysburg, Blair Co, PA on Dec. 21, 1846. His unit was mustered into service Jan. 3, 1847 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co, PA.

James was hosiptalized during May-June 1847 in Puebla, MEX, dying a few weeks later at age 22. Military records do not indicate if death was due to injuries or sickness. James was survived by his twin brother Thomas Williamson Hurd, who honored his dead twin by naming his first son James Henry.
