Doctor and author. He won the Hastings Gold Medal of the British Medical Association in 1870 and the Fothergillian Gold Medal of the Medical Society of London in 1878, making him the first man to hold both medals. He taught modern medicine how to both increase the energy of cardiac contractions and to stimulate the respiration. His "Manual of Dietetics" (1886) made him the first doctor to link diet with heart disease. He was the author of thirteen medical books and was the London correspondent to the "Philadelphia Medical Times." He also authored several novels.
