While teaching at the University of North Carolina, he founded the "Carolina Playmakers," one of the nation's most influential repertoire groups of its day. He served as a mentor to Thomas Wolfe, Paul Green, Sarah Knott, and Gwen Pharis, to name a few. Many writers attributed their success to his influence. The Carolina Playmakers produced a large number of writers, actors, directors, and designers who made names for themselves in movies and on Broadway. He published several collections of plays, including "American Folk Plays," "Mexican Folk Plays," and several in a series which featured writers from the Carolina Playmakers and other groups he fronted. Earlier in his career, he wrote several books about drama, including, "A Pageant of the Northwest," "Shakespeare the Playmaker," "Amateur Values in Pageantry," "The Amateur Theatre in the University," and "Toward the Municipal Theatre."
