Entered the service in New York was a veteran of the Spanish American War serving as a Fireman First Class, U.S. Navy. Aboard the U.S.S. Iowa on January 23, 1905, he showed extraordinary heroism at the time when the manhole plate of boiler D blew out on board that vessel. His citation was awarded on March 20, 1905.
