He began teaching at the University of North Carolina in 1915, but left to enlist in the United States Army during World War I, and achieved the rank of First Lieutenant. He returned to UNC to continue teaching. In 1930, he became the president of the University of North Carolina. He remained the president until being appointed to fill a vacancy in the United States Senate in 1949. He only served until 1950 when he lost election. Following his term in the Senate, he worked in various capacities for the United Nations between 1951 and 1968, including serving as mediator between India and Pakistan in their border dispute over Kashmir.
