Birth: Jan. 5, 1887
Death: Aug. 25, 1973

Ewell Brooks, 86, of Breckenridge; died Saturday at West Texas Medical Center in Abilene, TX. Services will be held Sunday at 3:00 p.m. in Melton's Chapel of Memories in Breckenridge, TX. Burial will follow in Breckenridge Cemetery. Ewell was born Jan. 5, 1887 in Scottsboro, AL. The Brooks family moved to Burleson, TX in 1890 and after his father died in 1893, his mother remarried in 1896, and moved the family to a farm near Denton, TX. From 1904 to 1907, Ewell trained as a machinist in the Santa Fe Railroad Shops for Dunigan Tool and Supply in Cleburne, TX. In October of 1907, Ewell went to El Paso, TX to work for the Railroad and a year later he became engaged to Bertie Ritchie. Ewell received an offer to work for Oil Well Supply in Corsicana, TX and Ewell quit Railroad work in El Paso in May of 1910 and went to Corsicana. On April 15, 1912, Ewell and Bertie Ritchie were married. Soon after, the Company transferred Ewell up to Bartlesville, OK. In 1913, they had their first child, Willie B. and in 1916, Ewell was called back to Corsicana. In the same year, Ewell and Bertie had their second child, Jack E. Brooks. First part of 1918, Ewell took a leave of absence from Oil Well Supply and moved his family out to California where Ewell had a strong urge to contribute his skills as a machinist for the War effort. He got a job at the Los Angeles Ship Building and Drydock Company at San Pedro, CA, where he helped build huge cargo ships of the Liberty class. After the Armistice was signed November 11, 1918, Ewell moved his family to Taft, CA, and started working for Oil Well Supply Company. Late December, he was asked to move to Ranger, TX. In 1920 the Company asked him to move to Breckenridge where he worked for 47 years and then Ewell retired in June of 1952. Survivors include his wife of the home; one daughter, Mrs. Allen (Willie B.) Bode of San Antonio, TX; one son, Jack E. of Oklahoma City, OK; one brother, Herschel Brooks of Tokio, TX; four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Ewell lived 86 years, 7 months, and 20 days.
