He was serving with the Brigade Reconnaissance Force deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.
LCpl Scanlon and Lt David Boyce were killed when their armoured vehicle struck an improvised explosive device while on a security patrol in the Yakchal region of Nahr-e Saraj in central Helmand province.
Aged 31, LCpl Scanlon was from Rhymney, Wales. He enlisted in November 1998 and served in to Bosnia in 2001 and Iraq in 2003 and 2005 before deciding to leave the army in July 2006. After a number of civilian jobs, he rejoined the regiment in September 2009 and was promoted to Lance Corporal in October 2010 in recognition of his skill and leadership during a demanding exercise season in Canada. Affectionately known as "Shag", he approached every task with a smile on his face. He was well-regarded as a vibrant character and a mentor to the younger soldiers. He was also fondly remembered for his varied concoctions as the squadron barman.
LCpl Scanlon leaves behind his mother Cherry, step-father Robert, father Raymond, sisters Lisa and Emma, stepsister Lauren and stepbrother Ryan, other relatives and many friends. His family said, Richard was a fun loving young man who enjoyed life to the full. He had a great love for his family - always helping them out whenever he could when needed. Richard was a great character and he will be sorely missed by his family and all who knew him. There will never be anyone else like our Richard."
