Herreid - The funeral for Wilmer A Werner, 84 of Herreid was held at Peace Lutheran Church in Herreid, South Dakota with Rev Robert Bipes officiating.

Burial was at Fairview Cemetery. Meyers Funeral Home of Linton, N.D. was in charge of arrangements.

Wilmer died Oct 31, 1998 at the Linton Hospital.

Wilmer A Werner was born in Dec 14, 1913 to Edward and Katie Green Werner on a farm near Herreid and graduated from Herreid High School in 1934. After graduation he farmed with his step-father and mother and found work on the West Coast during the dry summers. In 1941 he worked in the Alaskan gold mines in Juneau, Alaska and in construction in Sitka, Alaska. He returned to South Dakota in 1942.

He married Esther Bickel on July 15 1942, at Artas. He entered the US Army on Sept. 4, 1942 and served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater and was honorably discharged on Nov 4, 1945. In Jan 1946 they moved to Forbes, N.D. and owned and operated a general merchandise store called Peoples. In 1951 they moved to Aberdeen where they operated Curtiss Candy Business. In 1953 they moved to the family farm 4 1/2 miles West of Herreid.

In 1973 they received the Campbell County Conservation Award and were honored at South Dakota State University in Brookings and at the South Dakota State Fair. In 1996 they received the Century Farm Award and were again honored at the South Dakota State Fair.

Wilmer served on the Peace Lutheran Church Council. He was a member and past commander of Jacob A Heinrich American Legion and was also a member of the Color Guard.

Wilmer enjoyed the outdoors, working the land and feeding the cattle.

Survivors include his wife, one daughter and one son. A sister and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and step-father and one half sister.
