U.S. Senator, New Hampshire Governor. He became the owner-editor of the New Hampshire Patriot and entered politics as clerk of the New Hampshire State Senate, in 1819. He served as a member of the New Hampshire State Senate, (1820-23, 27-28) and was a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives in 1826. He also was the second comptroller of the U.S. Treasury, (1829-30) and served as a member of the U.S. Senate, (1831-36). In 1836, he was elected as a Democrat the 24th Governor of New Hampshire, serving until 1839. During his tenure, the state’s railroads were improved and the preservation of state documents was endorsed. After leaving the Governorship, he served as the U.S. Sub-Treasurer and resumed his newspaper interests until his death.
