Samuel Dibble
Birth: Sep. 16, 1837
Death: Sep. 16, 1913

U.S. Congressman. Born in Charleston, South Carolina, he graduated from Wofford College, in 1856 and taught at Shilow Academy, (1856-58). He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1859 and commenced to practice law in Orangeburg, South Carolina. During the Civil War, he served as a Lieutenant in the Confederate Army’s 1st Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers and 25th Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers. After the war, he resumed the practice of law and was editor of the Orangeburg News. Entering politics, he was a member of the South Carolina State House of Representatives, (1877-78), trustee of the University of South Carolina at Columbia in 1878, member of the Board of School Commissioners of Orangeburg County and a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1880. In 1881, he presented credentials as a Democratic member-elect to the Forty-seventh Congress to fill a vacancy of the death Michael P. O’Connor, serving until 1882. He was then elected to the Forty-eighth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving (1883-91). Declining to be a candidate for reelection, he engaged in banking and other business interests until his death at age 76 in Baltimore, Maryland. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
