US Congressman. Caldwell served as an assistant surgeon in the U.S. Army in 1831. He was a member of the North Carolina state legislature from 1836 to 1841. He was elected as a U.S. Representative from North Carolina from 1841 to 1843. Caldwell was a Captain during the U.S. war with Mexico. After the war, he returned to the state legislature in 1849.
