During the War of 1812 he served as a Lieutenant in Captain William Dooley's Company of the 2nd Regiment, West Tennessee Militia. He was elected as a Representative from Tennessee to the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1823 to 1827 (first as an At-Large delegate from 1823 to 1825, then from the 9th District from 1825 to 1827). In 1826 he lost a re-election bid for the seat to frontiersman David Crockett. Previous to his Congressional term he has served in the Tennessee State Senate in 1817, and after his Congressional term ended he served in the Tennessee state house of representatives from 1841 to 1843.
