Mayor Peter was a man of too much intelligence not to sympathize with the progressive movement, and of too much courage and sincerity to withhold his aid from the cause he believed in. It happened, therefore, that during his tenure as mayor under the monarchical regime which preceded the outbreak of 1848-49. Mr. Peter became well known and popular with that element in the community which stood for reform, but was looked upon with suspicion, if not positive dislike, by the reactionary powers. It was during this time also that that he became acquainted with and was closely allied with the leading men who represented the cause of freedom and constitutional government, Friends for the cause of freedom: who served in the Revolution of 1848-1849 in Baden,Germany. Friederich Hecker came to America in 1848 and Gustav Von Struve and wife Amalie came to America in 1849-1863, and both men fought in the Civil War; Herr Welker, Her Bassermann, Her Von Roteck, Her Von Itzstein, and other men of note; although the immediate efforts of their work were the uprisings and riots of 1848-1849 in Baden.Franz Joseph Peter married, at Achern, Grand Duchy of Baden, Germany, Maria Antonia Hof. She was born at Oberkirch, March 24, 1796, and was the daughter of Carl Bernhardt Hof and Franziske ( Schremp ) Hof. She came to the United States in 1850, bringing with her five children ( four daughters and one son ) . Here the family joined the husband and father, and for a brief period resided in New York City.
