She was born on January 27, 1905, on a farm near Clear Lake, Wis., to Swedish immigrant parents, A.J. and Anna (nee Christianson) Nelson. She was baptized in Alexandria, Minnesota.
She married Jack Engel in 1925 and raised two children, Russell and Lucille "Sis". The family moved to West Allis in 1928, where Jack took a job at Allis Chalmers.
Mildred was an early working mom. She had attended Clear Lake High School and graduated in 1934 from the Badger School of Beauty Culture in Milwaukee. She was a cosmetologist for over 35 years, managing her "Maureen Beauty Shop" in Milwaukee from 1943 to 1970.
Mildred found true happiness with Frank Starz who she married in 1954. They had 41 years of joyful marriage together. She enjoyed crocheting and cooking. She was a devout Christian, still reciting her meal and bedtime prayers in Swedish everyday.
