During the Civil War, he reached the rank of Colonel in the Confederate Army, and was wounded and captured during the Battle of Gettysburg. Following the war, he became the first president of the Society of Confederate Soldiers and Sailors in North Carolina. In 1883, he was elected to represent North Carolina in the United States House of Representatives, leaving office in 1887. In later life, he wrote, including the book "Recollections and Reflections; an Auto of Half a Century and More."
