| Birth: | Jan. 17, 1814 Fayetteville Cumberland County North Carolina, USA | | Death: | Aug. 4, 1857 Fayetteville Cumberland County North Carolina, USA |  US Congressman. Presidential Cabinet Secretary. He was elected to represent North Carolina in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1845 to 1847. From 1848 to 1852, he was a member of the North Carolina State House of Commons, becoming the speaker in 1850. In 1853, he was named Secretary of the Navy, holding that position until 1857. Shortly after leaving office, he died of tuberculosis. The "USS Dobbin" (Ad-3) was named for him. The ship was in Pearl Harbor during the December 7, 1941 attack, where it received minor damage and continued service during World War II. (bio by: Evening Blues) Family links: Spouse: Louisa C.
