During the Civil War he joined "the Rough and Ready Guards" of Buncombe County, which became part of Company F, 14th North Carolina Infantry regiment. Starting as a Sergeant, he eventually rose to the rank of Captain and commander of the company. At the July 1, 1862 Battle of Malvern Hill, he was critically wounded three times. After recovering, he became Quartermaster on the staff of Colonel W. C. Walker. Following the war, he served as the mayor of Ashville, North Carolina in 1869, and in the 1870s served in both the North Carolina House of Representatives and Senate. He was elected as a Democrat to represent North Carolina's 9th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1885 to 1889.
