Roman Catholic Cardinal. Seventeenth bishop and fifth archbishop of Québec. A native of Lévis (Québec), he studied in Québec and in Rome where he was ordained priest by Cardinal Patrizzi on June 10, 1865. He spent two additional years studying Oriental languages in Rome and one year of philosophy in Innsbruck (Austria). He traveled then to Italy, Prussia, Sweden, Belgium, France, England and Palestine. He returned to Québec in June 1867. He served as a Faculty member of Laval University, from October 1868 to 1877. Then he acted as Prefect of studies at the Minor Seminary of Québec, from 1877 to 1884. Having been named principal of the Normal School of Laval in1884, he kept this position until his election as the second bishop of Chicoutimi in 1888. On December 22, 1891, he was promoted archbishop of Cyrène and coadjutor of Québec. On September 3, 1894, he was named administrator of the archdiocese of Québec. On 12 April 1898, when Archbishop Taschereau died, he took officially his charge and title. On May 25, 1914, Pope Pius X created him cardinal. On June 10, 1915, he restored the metropolitan chapter of Québec. In April 1920,he obtained that Bishop P.-E. Roy, who had been given to him as auxiliary bishop in 1908, is named his coadjutor with right of succession. He participated in the First Plenary Council of Canada, in June 1909. After years of suffering paralysis, he died in his episcopal city. (bio by: Guy Gagnon)
