| Birth: | Dec. 10, 1820 | | Death: | Mar. 4, 1821 | British Royalty. Born at St. James's Palace, London, daughter of Prince William, Duke of Clarence, the third eldest son of King George III, and Princess Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen. The Duchess of Clarence had several difficult pregnancies and Elizabeth's elder sister, Princess Charlotte of Clarence, died on the day she was born in 1819 while twin bothers were stillborn. At the time of her birth, she was third in the line of succession to the British throne. As a granddaughter of the King, she was styled Her Royal Highness Princess Elizabeth of Clarence. Her father, the Duke of Clarence, was the second in line to the throne following the death of his niece, Princess Charlotte of Wales in 1817, and his father George III in 1820. Neither King George IV or his brother Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany, had legitimate children so it seemed likely that Princess Elizabeth would succeed as Queen. The Princess, however, died in infancy, succumbing to convulsions when less than three months old. Her cousin, Princess Victoria of Kent, would succeed Elizabeth's father and became Queen in 1837. Victoria kept a bust of her infant cousin Elizabeth in her private apartments for many years. (bio by: Iola)
