Obituary
Capt. George Wiard, aged 80, president of the Wiard Plow Co., of Batavia, N.Y., expired Thursday night, Dec. 11, at his home in Batavia, following a brief illness of heart trouble. Deceased, who was one of Batavia's most enterprising citizens, was born on March 11, 1833., in Ancaster, Ontario, Canada, the son of William and Lucinda Wiard, and is a member of a family which has manufactured plows in the Empire state for more than one hundred years.
On August 1, 1862, Mr. Wiard enlisted as a private in the 129th regiment of New York infantry, which Peter A. Porter organized. He served as second lieutenant of Co. H. He was wounded at Petersburg, on June 17, 1864, receiving a bullet in the leg. Capt. Wiard later was made a captain in Co. K, 4th regiment, heavy artillery. He was honorably discharged from the army in October, 1865, after exceedingly faithful and arduous service, and returned to Avon, N.Y., where he engaged in the manufacture of plows, buying a half interest of his uncle, Matthew Wiard, in the Wiard Plow Works in Avon, where Thomas Wiard built the first Wiard plow in 1804, which business was conducted under the firm name of M. & G. Wiard, and continued until 1871, when C.W. Hough, late of Batavia, N.Y., purchased Matthew Wiard's interest, and the plant then was removed to Batavia, N.Y. A factory was erected in 1876, and during that year the Wiard Plow Co. was organized and incorporated with Mr. Wiard as president and general superintendent. He held the office of president of the company at the time of heath. The Wiard Plow Co. is one of Batavia's largest manufacturing industries. Besides his wife deceased leaves four sons, Louis Wiard, mayor of Batavia; Ernest E., of Batavia; Harry G., of Syracuse, N.Y., and Henry I. Wiard, of Buffalo, and one daughter, Mrs. J. Ernest Fifle, of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Burial was Monday morning, Dec. 15, in Hillside cemetery, Batavia, N.Y.
