Born in Kilkenny, Ireland, he served as a Company Sergeant-Major in the 8th Infantry Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force. On April 24, 1915, during the Second Battle of Ypres Belgium, when a wounded man who was lying some 15 yards from the trench called for help, Sergeant-Major Hall with two other soldiers tried to reach him despite being subjected to heavy enemy gunfire. The first attempt failed, with the two men accompanying Sergeant-Major Hall being wounded. Sergeant-Major Hall, then went out alone and was in the process of lifting up the wounded man when he was fatally struck. For the gallant valor to save a comrades life, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross on June 23, 1915. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
