| Birth: | Sep. 7, 1871 | | Death: | Sep. 21, 1917 |  2nd Boer War Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Guildford, Surrey England, he served as a Lieutenant in the Indian Staff Corps attached Light Horse, Indian Army. In actions at Korn Spruit, South Africa, March 31, 1900, Lieutenant Maxwell although not an officer belonging to Q Battery, Royal Horse Artillery, took it a pond himself the duty of saving the guns of the battery during an enemy assault. On five different occasions being assisted by gunners and other men, he went out under fire to bring in two guns. He also went out with to officers, dragged in other gun, then went to try an get the last gun in and remained there until the attempt was abandoned. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was promoted Captain and awarded the Victoria Cross in March, 1901. He later obtained the rank of Brigadier General commanding the 27th Lowland Brigade of the 9th Scottish Division and was killed in action at the Battle of Ypres, Belgium, in World War I.
