Artist. Born in Rome to English parents who were both painters, he was known as "Nino" to his family, and lived in Rome until the age of 6. When the family returned to England, he began to study painting at his father's studio, then at the Royal Academy Schools beginning in 1870. His early work was heavily influenced by Sir Laurence Alma-Tadema (who was to later paint a portrait of Waterhouse), and by the time he became a member of the Royal Academy in 1895, his art was compared to that of Burne-Jones or Leighton. While very much a Classicist painter, Waterhouse is often considered a Pre-Raphaelite due to the recurring femme-fatale and poetic themes of this work. But Waterhouse was never a member of the Brotherhood. His work has only recently begun to resurface in the mainstream, but during his lifetime he was considered one of the greatest artists of his day. His most famous paintings include "The Lady of Shalotte," "My Sweet Rose," and "Miranda." His last known painting, unfinished at his death, was "The Enchanted Garden." (bio by: VampireRed)
