STEELE -- Leah Tompt, 100, Fargo, died June 17, 1994, in a Fargo nursing home. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church, Steele, with the Rev. Marvin Winstryg officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Steele.
Leah Saur was born in Faulkner, Iowa, on Nov. 5, 1893, the daughter of Henry and Alice (French) Saur. When she was nine, the family moved to a homestead near Long Lake in Kidder County, where she grew up. She attended grade school near Driscoll and high school in Bismarck. In 1912 she married Peder Tompt. They farmed near LaMoure, and then lived in Driscoll before moving to Steele in 1933. He died in 1968. She lived in Steele until 1980, when she moved to Fargo and made her home with her daughter, Ethel Anderson. In July 1991 she became a resident of Bethany Homes in Fargo.
She attended the Methodist Church, and was an active member of United Methodist Women. She was also a member of Fine Arts Club, Steele, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Auxiliary. She belonged to North Dakota Homemakers for over 50 years and received a lifetime membership. She was a charter member of Steele Golden Age Club, and a member of Community Seniors of Fargo. Leah was an ardent sports fan, regularly attending local basketball games and watching bowling teams in Steele. She was also an avid Minnesota Twins Baseball fan. Crocheting was another one of her main pasttimes, and she had made an afgan for each of her grandchildren. Her memory was exceptional, and her mind sharp to the end.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Edwin and Margaret, Homestead, Mont., and Kenneth and Rachel, Fargo; four daughters, Ethel Anderson and Esther Wigton, both of Fargo, Doris Elness, Sterling, and Elsie Hannon, Camarillo, Calif.; two sisters, June Kiger, Grand Rapids, Minn., and Louise Crandall, Aurora, Colo.; 22 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.
