Lula McGougan Mallard of Tabor City, NC died on November 11, 2011. She was 102 years old, born September 18, 1909 to Duncan McGougan and Dula Allsbrook McGougan at their home in Green Sea, SC. She moved with her family to Tabor City, NC in 1913. She graduated from Tabor City High School in 1927 and entered Meredith College in the fall. Returning to Tabor City in 1931, she taught 3rd grade in Guideway for one year and then 1st grade in Tabor City through the 1936-37 school year. A much loved teacher, she was recognized in 2000 when members of her first grade class from 1936 had a gathering in her honor. While she only worked in the school system for 5 years she taught throughout her life, sharing her love of history and of family in many ways. Her gracious and positive outlook on life and her continued love of learning drew people of all ages to her.
On June 8, 1935 Lula married Raymond Bowden Mallard and they moved into a house next door to her parents where she resided until her death. She was a member of Tabor City Baptist Church, a member of the Pioneer Study Club, an active member of the Columbus County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and a member of the Sir Walter Cabinet in Raleigh. She enjoyed traveling around the state of North Carolina with her husband as he served on the NC Superior Court and the NC Court of Appeals.
She is survived by her daughter, Anne Elizabeth Mallard Sanders, of Myrtle Beach, SC; her granddaughters LuAnne Sanders Martini and her husband John, of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Mary Elizabeth "Libby" Sanders Brewington and her husband Scott, of Greensboro, NC; six great grandchildren, Sanders Charles Martini, John Coleman Martini, Maryanne McLeod Martini, John Loff "Jack" Martini III, Elizabeth Coleman Brewington, and Bradley Scott "Brad" Brewington, Jr.; her sister, Esther McGougan Hughes; and many devoted nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at Tabor City Baptist Church 11 a.m. Monday November 14th with burial to follow in the Forest Lawn Cemetery, Tabor City, NC. The family will receive visitors at the church from 10-11 a.m. prior to the service.
