Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor recipient. He entered the Union Army at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and served as Lieutenant and Adjutant, in the 6th U.S. Colored Troops Regiment. He took up the flag after 3 color bearers had been shot down and bore it forward, even though he himself was wounded.
