James “Jim” David McMurtrey, 90, of Ririe, Idaho passed away Wednesday, April 13, 2016. He was born December 2, 1925 in Ririe, Idaho the son of Horace Robert and Cora M. Fox McMurtrey. Jim served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. After his service, he married Leona Bertha Allen on June 15, 1945 in Dillon, Montana.

Ririe was his home most of his whole life. He loved working with animals which was his occupation and his hobby. He worked as a rancher, a farmer and in construction. He was involved in and a supporter of the Jefferson County Posse, The National Cutter Racing Association, the American Quarter Horse Association and as a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Post 576, Idaho Falls, Idaho. Jim made it a point to be to all the practices of the Jefferson County Junior Posse to watch his grandchildren and friends. He loved serving the community and was honored when he was chosen to be the Grand Marshall of the Jefferson County Rodeo. When there wasn’t a race to attend, he loved either fishing, hunting, camping or riding horses.

Jim is survived by his daughters; Audrey Diane (Everett) Henrie of Archer, ID, Lonnie Jill (Salih) Wootten of Idaho Falls, ID, Dana Lee (Steve) Neville of Ririe, ID, Stephanie Kay (Keith) Graham of Ririe, ID and Carolyn Louise Parke of Idaho Falls, ID. Sons; Buddy James “Turk” (Trudi) McMurtrey of Idaho Falls, ID, Joseph Robert (Ann Marie) McMurtrey of Idaho Falls, ID, Sydney Blake McMurtrey of Ririe, ID. His sister, Hazel Marie (Larry) Jensen of Blackfoot, ID. 40 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and 18 great-great grandchildren.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Leona Bertha McMurtrey, and a son, Phillip Alan McMurtrey. Brothers, Lamont Price McMurtrey, Horace Nyle McMurtrey, Vernal Ray McMurtrey, Verl Keith McMurtrey, Robert Max McMurtrey and Lewis McMurtrey. A sister, Romana Jane Clark. A son-in-law, Everett Henrie and a daughter-in-law ReNee McMurtrey and one great granddaughter.

A funeral service will be held for Jim on Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at 11:00 AM in the Ririe LDS Stake Center (13319 North 130th East, Ririe, ID). The family will meet with friends Monday, April 18th from 6 to 8 PM at Eckersell Memorial Chapel (101 West Main, Rigby, ID) and again on Tuesday prior to services from 9:30 to 10:45 AM at the Ririe Stake Center. Interment will be in the Ririe-Shelton Cemetery.
