Lucinda Loport Buchanan was the first child born to William Allen Buchanan 1833 – 1904 and Elizabeth Jane Hawkins 1846 – 1926. Her siblings were: Alice Buchanan 1869; James Allen Buchanan 1876 – 1940, he married Mattie Peavler; George Alexander Buchanan 1877 – 1936, he married Marthia "Mattie" Ellen Gibson; Mary Elizabeth Buchanan 1880 – 1954; Chester Venoy Buchanan 1881 – 1944, he married Viola Knox; Joseph Andrew Buchanan 1887 – 1946, he married Katherine; and Effie M Buchanan 1890.
From the census of 1880, Lucinda is 6 years old, and living in rural Rogersville. In the neighborhood were 3 little playmates close to her age. The immediate neighbors, Mr. George and Mrs. Melinda Carr had a six year old daughter named Nanny. Other neighbors living near were the Willis family with 5 year old, Mary Ann, and the Galbreth family with Maggie who was also 5 years old.
Lucinda chose for her husband, James Martin Synamon, and Tennessee State Marriages Records confirm that they were married on Oct. 19 1892. Lucinda gave birth to 11 children: Henry Synamon 1894; Edward Synamon 1896; Lillian Ruth Synamon 1897; Greeley Synamon 1900; Mary Synamon 1903; William Synamon 1905; Howard Synamon 1908; Analee Synamon 1910; Cecil Synamon 1912; Eunice Synamon 1915; Hugh Kyle Synamon 1917.
The 1910 census related that Lucinda and Jim owned their home and farm free from a mortgage, in the Civil District 2, Hawkins, Tennessee, and that Lucinda had been married 17 years and had given birth to 8 children and they were all living.
When the 1920 census was taken the United States was in the midst of the Great Depression and the census revealed some big changes in the Synamon family. It was difficult to make ends meet. They still owned the farm, but found it necessary to take out a mortgage. Mother, Elizabeth Jane Buchanan, was living with them. Jim had found employment and was working away from home as farm laborer. There son, Greeley, also had a job for wages as a farm laborer. William 15, and Howard 12, was doing farm labor on the home farm. Probably Lula and the girls were also helping with chores.
On Sept. 26, 1926 The Lord called grandma Elizabeth home. It was a sad day for all of the family. They had to prepare for her funeral. Her grave was reserved next to grandpa and they would gather at the Quarryville Cemetery to bid farewell to a beloved mother, grandma and friend.
In the 1930 census The family was living on Stubblefield Road, in Rural Morrisburg. Jim was still farming on rented land. Lula had found employment as a nurse for a private family. William was working out as a farm laborer. and George was a laborer on the State Highway.
Census records aren't available at this time for 1940, probably due to the census taker spelling their name wrong.
According to the death certificate of Lula's husband, Jim went the doctor on March 10, 1942, and 7 days later at 12:45 pm he past away. The cause of death is illegible. James's body was taken to Harrison Funeral Home in Rogersville, to be prepared for burial. The family gathered at the Meadow Branch Cemetery, at Bean Station, Grainger County, Tennessee to lay their beloved husband, father, and friend to rest.
Lula remained a widow for 8 years before went to live with the Lord. Her death certificate revealed that she passed away on Jan. 1, 1950 at the Lyon Hospital in Rogersville. The cause of death was listed as Hyprostatic pneumonia due to a Cerebral Hemorrhage. Her body was taken to Colboch-Price funeral director in Rogersville to be prepared for burial on Jan 3, at the Gilley Cemetery. Her children and friends gathered at the cemetery to bid their beloved mother and friend farewell. (bio by Audrey DeCamp Hoffman)
