Religeious Leader. He was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on January 20, 1833 by David W. Patten in Western New York. Shortly after joining the Church, he and his moved to Kirtland, Ohio to assist in the building of the Temple. One of Joseph Smith's earliest converts, he was instrumental in the forming of the Mormon religion. Ordained Elder in 1833, he was an architect and designed one of the early churches. He was in the Circle of Twelve and the Council of Fifty. When Joseph Smith was asassinated, Alpheus Cutler was one of the pall bearers. He broke away from the church when Brigham Young took over because he felt that Joseph Smith had promised the leadership of the people should go to him if anything happened to him, and felt he couldn't follow Brigham Young. He then started his own church, called the Cutlerite Church, following the same doctrines as the Mormon religion. The Cutlerite Church is still in existence today in Minnesota.
