Born Mei-Ling Soong in Wen-Ch'ang, Kwangtung Province, China, on March 5, 1897, she moved to the United States in 1917 to study and later received a degree in English Literature. On December 5, 1927, she married Chiang Kai-Shek, who later served as President of Taiwan from 1949 to his death on April 5, 1975. After becoming Madame Chiang Kai-Shek she became an active artist, author, and goodwill ambassador. She even became the inspiration for the comic strip 'Dragon Lady' and appeared twice on the cover of Time Magazine. After her husband's death on April 5, 1975, she continued to travel and make appearances. She later moved to New York City and died there on October 23, 2003, at the age of 106.
