Lavinnia and John were married in 1853. John was the son of John Sr. and Mary Swales Hugill. He bought a photographers business from Fred A. Baker of Ingarsoll. He opened in April of 1866 and later sold his business to his son in Feb. of 1883. Photographs taken by him and his son can still be found today, with their trademark stamps on the back.

DEATH OF JOHN HUGILL--The death of Mr. John Hugill, father of Mr. E. H. Hugill, occurred at Hamilton, last evening, in his 82nd year, after an illness of several weeks The late Mr. Hugill had resided in St. Thomas for many years where he was widely known and highly esteemed. Prior to going to St. Thomas, he was a resident of Ingersoll, and many friends here will learn with regret of his death. He went to Hamilton on a visit during the Christmas holidays when he was stricken with paralysis. The funeral will take place at St. Thomas
