Vern Wood Hillyard of Holladay, Utah died peacefully in his sleep on April 4, 2002, while visiting his eldest daughter in Pioneertown, CA.
Born in Auburn, Star Valley, Wyoming on Dec. 29, 1924. He served as a Naval Officer in World War II. He earned a Mechanical Engineering Degree from the University of Minnesota and worked in the field of engineering for 45 years. Twenty of those years were spent in the oil fields in Houston, Texas where he met and married Phyllis Bane. The marriage was later sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple.
Vern loved the outdoors, his horses, hunting, gardening, his family and his church. As a High Priest in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served in many capacities including the Bishopric, The Stake Young Men's Organization and Sunday School President. He has attended the Cottonwood 4th Ward for 32 years.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years and son Robert Bane Hillyard of Holladay, daughters Ada Jeanne Gatherum of Pioneertown, CA, Tina (Greg) Koehler of Murray, UT. He also leaves behind a sister LaRue (Von) Levitt of Oceanside, CA and brothers Ronald (Edna Mae) Hillyard of Afton, WY and James (Carol) Hillyard of Holladay, UT; grandchildren Brent (Honey) Stoll of Las Vegas, NV, Tyler and Taryn Koehler of Murray, UT, Zachary Gatherum of Pioneertown, CA; great-grandchildren Rex Hillyard Stoll and Emilena Bryn Stoll.
He dearly loved these family members along with their spouses and children.
A Funeral Service will be held Thursday, April 11th at 12 noon at the Cottonwood 4th & 7th Ward Chapel, 5565 Neighbor Lane, Salt Lake City. Friends may call on Wednesday from 6 until 8 p.m. at Mountain View Memorial Estates, 3115 East 7800 South and one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment, Mtn. View Memorial Estates.
