Mrs. Bessie Alice Allen, 57, well known Carroll county resident, died at the family home, south of Delphi in Madison township last Thursday morning. She had been ill since December.
Born August 24, 1896, she was the daughter of David; and, Alice (Craig) Zook. She was reared in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Elias Shively. Here marriage to L. D. Allen was an event of December 6, 1913. Mrs. Allen was a member of the First Brethren church in Flora and during World War II was president and one of the founders of the Delphi War Mothers group. Through Mrs. Allen’s efforts, a complete listing of every known serviceman and Woman in the county was published following World War II.
Surviving with the husband are: two daughters, Beatrice Nipple, at home; Mrs. Monelle Groninger, route 3, Delphi; three grandchildren; a brother, Lloyd Zook, route 4, Delphi; a sister, Roxie Wingard of Bringhurst; half-brothers and half-sisters: Goldie Zook, route 4, Delphi; Orton Zook, Ockley, Clarence Zook, Bringhurst, Mrs. Gladys Baxter, Brinighurst, Donnabelle Clawson, Radnor, Truman Zook, route 4, Delphi John Zook, Camden, and Roberta Wagoner. One son, Durd Boyd, died in 1916 and another Elmer, died during World War II.
Funeral rites were held Saturday from the Church of the Brethren with Rev. C. A. Stewart officiating. Burial was in the Zion cemetery. Carter funeral home Was in charge of arrangements.
