Haynes Emma Martha Faribault Daily News 06/May/1953 DUNDAS--(Special)--Funeral services for Mrs. C. E. Haynes were held in the Dundas Methodist Church on Friday afternoon, May 1, at 2 o'clock. The scripture and prayer were given by the Rev. William E. Shields of Faribault Methodist church; the obituary and sermon by the Rev. Elden Brown of the Dundas church; and the benediction by the Rev. Richard Douglas of Northfield Methodist church. Mrs. Brown played the prelude and was accompanist for the duet "I Walk With the King" by Marilyn and Ruth Ann Sellars. Mrs. Adam Aldorfer was pianist for the duets by Cecil Hutton and Arnold Lufti, "One Sweetly Solemn Thought" and "Servant of God, Well Done." Interment was in Groveland Cemetery in the Knoefel family plot. The pallbearers were Earl Orr, Herbert Clarine, and Richard Thompson of Faribault, and Edward O. Chester, Ralph Chester and Walter Thielbar. A large number from this vicinity and Faribault attended the services as well as Mr. and Mrs. David Haynes and daughter Merry Ann of Mediapolis, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Edward Haynes of Minneapolis; Mr. and Mrs. George G. Knoefel, Mr. and Mrs. Philo Haynes and Mrs. Martha Anderson of St. Paul; Mrs. Minnie Stedman and sons Glen and Earl of Cannon Falls; and Mrs. Fred Neil of Castle Rock. Emma Martha Knoefel was born in Dundas on June 1, 1875. She was the daughter of pioneer parents, J. Gustav and Marie Siemon Knoefel and was born in the house built by her father. The house has since been her home. She graduated from the Dundas High School and from Mankato Teachers College, and later attended sessions at the University of Minnesota; the University of the State of Washington; and the University of Chicago. She taught for several years in the rural schools of Rice County, and in 1905 went to Faribault to begin a teaching career which lasted for 27 years. For 15 years she taught in the elementary grades there and then was promoted to the position of supervisor of the first six grades in five elementary schools, a position which she maintained for 12 years. Upon her retirement in 1932 she returned to Dundas with her sister, Miss Salome Knoefel, to make their home. Her sister died suddenly of a heart attack in April, 1943. On April 9, 1946 Miss Emma Knoefel and the Rev. Charles E. Haynes, then pastor of the Dundas and Little Prairie Churches, were united in marriage. Dr. George Mecklenberg officiated at the wedding which took place in Wesley Church in Minneapolis. Shortly after Rev. Haynes permanently retired from active ministerial work. They continued to make their home in Dundas, spending the winters in Florida. In January of this year Mrs. Haynes became ill. Her illness continued, but she felt strong enough to make the trip home to Dundas the first week in April. They arrived here on Monday, April 13. Four days later, on Friday the 17, she entered the Northfield hospital, and passed away there early Tuesday morning, April 28. She is survived by her husband; one brother, George G. Knoefel of St. Paul; and one nephew, H. K. Knoefel of Worland, Wyoming. Throughout her life Mrs. Haynes was a devoted church worker. At an early age, in 1890, she became a member of the Baptist Church in Randolph. Upon going to Faribault, she continued her interest in that church and while there was superintendent of the Sunday school for a term, clerk of the church for seven years, and president of the Philathea class. Upon coming to Dundas she transferred to the Methodist Church where she continued to be very active. She served as church treasurer for eight years, was teacher of a girls Bible class and also missionary secretary in Sunday school; served a term as president of the Women's Society of Christian Service, and had been chairman of devotions for several years. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Sheba Chapter, of Northfield; a member of the Dundas Degree of Honor Protective Association; and until recently a member of the Dundas Study Club.
