GALENA, Ill. -- Marita Metzger, 100, of Galena, died peacefully Saturday, Oct. 29, 2011, with family by her side in Plano, Texas.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Galena. Cremation rites have been accorded. Burial will be in St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery, Galena.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena, where the parish rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. Friends also may call after 10 a.m. Saturday at the church.

She was born on July 10, 1911, in Galena, daughter of Andrew Z. and Julia A. (Kuhl) Bussan. She married Karl A. Metzger on Jan. 24, 1931; he preceded her in death on July 28, 1998.

Marita co-owned Metzger's Grocery and Market with husband, Karl, on Main Street for 22 years. She also worked at Clingman's Pharmacy, Galena, for 19 years. She had boundless energy and always enjoyed working and interacting with customers.

She loved to dance, especially the Charleston and the fox-trot, the faster the better! During the '40s, she was an avid supporter of the Galena Merchants baseball team, managed by husband, Karl. At 100 years old, she still enjoyed going to Mass, reading, crossword puzzles and shopping. She took great pride in her appearance, always looking top notch whenever she went out.

Marita said the daily rosary and her prayers without fail. She will be remembered as a superb housekeeper, cook and baker. She was a devoted and caring daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be sadly missed.

Surviving are her daughter, Norma Jean Nagle, of New Hope, Minn.; two sons, Thomas (Judy) Metzger, of Carrollton, Texas, and Dr. Robert (Carol) Metzger, of Longwood, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Camilla Stovall and Florence (Dale) Zeal; three sisters in-law, Ollie Bussan, Nadane Bussan and Carol Bussan; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Lenora "Lennie" Donahue; four brothers, Vincent "Pete," Delbert "Ike," Leroy "Roy" and Melvin "Tink," Bussan; a son-in-law, Edward Nagle; two brothers-in-law, Francis "Dick" Donahue and Robert Stovall; and a sister-in-law, Lynette Bussan.
