James C. Barrett, 81, of Franklin RD 4, died at 6:15 a.m. Thursday, April 12, 2001, in St. Vincent Health Center, Erie. Born May 21, 1919, in Manila, Philippine Islands, he was a son of Mr. and Mrs. James Barrett. When Japan attacked the Philippines in December 1941, Mr. Barrett volunteered for duty with the U.S. Army. He served during World War II with the 31st Infantry. He was on Batman Peninsula when it fell to the Japanese. He spent three years as a prisoner of war in Kobe, Japan. While a prisoner of war, he witnessed the dark cloud and heard the blast of the atomic bomb being dropped on Nagasaki. Mr. Barrett had been employed as a carpenter, pipe fitter and plumber. He was employed for 30 years by C.P.T., retiring in 1983. He was a member of St. Patrick Church, the American Legion and the VFW. Mr. Barrett enjoyed carpentry, working in his yard and raising plants. He was married in October 1947 to the former Anna Jane Barrett, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Shelia LESTER and her husband, Dick, of Eureka, Calif., and Linda Barrett of Mission Viejo, Calif.; three sons, Joel Barrett of Mission Viejo. Calif., John Barrett of Torrance, Calif., and Bruce Barrett and his wife, Sherie, of Franklin; seven grandchildren, Aaron, Ryan, Bobbie, Scott and Julianna Lester of Eureka. Calif., Joanna Barrett of Torrance, Calif., and Andrew Barrett of Franklin; and a great-grandson. He also is survived by a sister, Felli Barrett of California. In addition to his parents, Mr. Barrett was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Huff Chapel, 312 W. Park St. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home with the Rev. Robert Manning officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Hill Memorial Gardens.
