Senator Gordon C. HERR June 22, 1926 ~ August 21, 2009 Seattle native Gordon C. Herr passed away late August 21st at Burien Nursing Home from heart complications. He was 83. Gordon was the youngest of Amos and Dora Herr, who founded the Herr Lumber Company, which became a successful business in the West Seattle area located on Alki Beach for many years. Gordon graduated from West Seattle High School, served in the US Air Force, the Merchant Marines, and working in the family-owned business before marrying Patricia Dolphin in 1949. Together over the years they raised four daughters and one son. Later, Gordon, attended the University of Washington and Real Estate School, becoming a licensed Realtor in the State of Washington. Gordon was always interested in politics, so in 1964, after one un successful attempt, was elected to the House of Representatives, 31st District, Kind County and in 1966 was appointed by the Gov ernor to The State Senate where he was re-elected and served until 1978. While in the Senate, Gordon served on many committees, in cluding chairing the committee on Financial Institutions and In surance; served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Local Government and Chairman of this Senate Committee on Parks. In 1970, Gordon took the position of Executive Director of the Washington Association of Water Districts. He loved his position and loved traveling the state, at tending seminars and conferenc es he set up with his water dis tricts around the state, his family always helping him. Gordon's loving wife passed away in May of 1977. His political life continued and he met Sue Fontaine in 1982 and together they relocated to New York City where they did eventually marry in 1987. The couple lived and worked in NYC, St. Petersburg, Florida, and Lake Okoboji, Iowa, as well as traveling home on vacations and holidays to see Gordon's family out West. Gordon and Sue were divorced in 2007 and Gordon became again a permanent Seattlite. In his later years he loved spending time with his grandchildren and especially his son Dan, who took him every where. Gordon is survived by his five children, Claudia Girard of Port Angeles, WA, Nedra Morrison of Edmonds, WA, Dan Herr of Buri en, WA, Cecilia Loftus of SeaTac, WA and Priscilla Foxen of Seat tle, WA; and five grandchildren.
