Samuel J. Gaston was the sixth son of William D. and Lucinda (née White) and the brother of John Davidson Gaston (1826 – 1840), Mary Agnes Gaston (1833 – 1871), Stephen H. Gaston (1837 – 1912), Joseph White Gaston (1839 – 1841), Robert White Gaston (1841 – 1911), William A. Gaston (1843 – 1865), Martha E. Gaston (1847 – 1874), Sarah B. Gaston (1848 – 1923) and James Henry Gaston (1853 – 1932). He was born on his parents farm the 18th day of February 1846 in Jefferson County, Illinois.

On September 30th 1872, Samuel Gaston married Martha J. Harvey, daughter of Jasper and Melvina Harvey of Crawford County, Illinois. This union produced one son, Joseph Edward Gaston.

Samuel Gaston died June 2, 1881 and is buried with his parents and several brothers & sisters in the family cemetery.
