Enlisted as a Pvt & Gunsmith in Co. E. 14th MI Vols. Inf. at Owasso, MI in Nov 1861. Mustered out with rank of Sgt. at Louisville, KY in July 1865.

-William's older bro: Lyman S. Dunbar [1824-1863] US Civil War- died Sept 9, 1863 ... (yellow fever)
Death on ship fleet, buried in waters of Gulf of Mexico.
-Wm's older bro: Svlvester V. Dunbar, US Civil War -
Co. 1, 154th REG INF VOL NY - Prisoner in Libby Prison.
-Wm's father: Lyman Dunbar [1800-1884] was 12 yrs old when a teamster in the War of 1812. Lyman's father, Daniel Dunbar (name may have been Warren Daniel) was supposedly killed in battle during War of 1812.
-Wm's maternal grnftr, Ezekial Merrit was a Rev. War soldier of CT.
